The Intent of This Blog

This blog is intended to be a tool for the growth of whoever wants to use it. It is a daily journal intended to help us be more introspective. Every day I will do my best to supply a motivational quote, a Bible verse, a vocabulary word, and a personal message from myself. Use these if you like as motivation to improve yourself. Then, simply answer the daily questions provided honestly and see if it has an impact on your life. Zig Ziglar said, "If you don't have daily objectives, you qualify as a dreamer." Lets not be just dreamers but doers. Remember Martin Luther King Jr not only had a dream, he also had an objective. Thanks for reading, Jake

Humble Detente

“Pride makes us artificial and humility makes us real.” - Thomas Merton

Humble yourselves before the Lord and He will lift you up. -  James 4:10

Detente: “the easing of hostility or strained relations, esp. between countries” - New Oxford American Dictionary

“I have been in command for 30 years!  Who are you to oppose me?”
The captain blurted as defiantly and authoritatively as one could muster.
“But sir, you are losing your command.”
Came the gentle reply from the ensign.

How often have we seen humility fail?  How often have we seen leadership faulted as a result.  How often has our humility left our leadership?  The simple exchange of words between a captain and ensign I initially described may be fictional, but they’re also a reality in many ways.  The Costa Concordia, Enron, the Exxon Valdez, the BP Oil Spill.  They were all mistakes.  They all involved leadership error.  They all resembled a child, caught in an act, trying to cover up a mistake.  We all make mistakes.  It is through humility that they are rectified.  Jesus on the Cross ultimately paid for our mistakes.  Do we have the humility to let the control of our lives and our “Goodness” slip through our fingers?  Do we have the ability to hand our perfection to Jesus?  It’s not ours to attain in the first place.  It’s His to give.

“Ensign, for 30 years I have gotten my way.  Throughout that time I’ve been right and I’ve been wrong.  I’ve paid for my mistakes and I’ve reaped the rewards of success too.  But there are mistakes too big to come back from.  Mistakes I don’t want to pay the price for.  Mistakes we can’t afford.  Today I made one of those mistakes.  You saw it.  You knew it.  You corrected it.  And you had the courage to say it to me.  It was out of pride that I responded at first.  It is out of humility that I ask forgiveness.”

Humility…  It’s the only chance of detente.  Do we have it?

Daily Journaling Questions:
How did I help someone in kindness today?
What did I learn today?
What am I thankful for?
Who did I love today?
What am I dreaming of?
What about today do I want to remember forever?
What are my goals for tomorrow?
Thanks for reading,

Jake
